56 days under the scrutiny of roadside inspections – new regulations from the end of 2024

As of 31 December 2024, drivers in the European Union will be required to present data from the current day as well as from the prior 56 days during a roadside inspection.

The changes are a result of EU Regulation 2020/1054, which amends Article 36 of EU Regulation 165/2014. This means extending the control period for roadside inspections from 28 to 56 days. The new rules cover carriages carried out in accordance with Regulation 561/2006.

New features in software for inspection authorities

To make it easier to control the extended period, we have made appropriate modifications to the software for inspection authorities. The first noticeable change is that the control defaults to 56 days back from the current date, along with the option to select 28 days or any other range.  This function is particularly important for carriages carried out under the AETR agreement, for which the control period remains unchanged.

We would like to remind you that when downloading data from the tachograph, the appropriate range of days needs to be set on the data reader. If this range is changed, inspectors can manually adjust the settings using the device configurator, increasing the number of days from 28 to 56.

To make setup easier, users of TachoReader Combo and Basic devices using the latest version of TachoScan Control will see a special message. After accepting it, the system will automatically change the set range of days from 28 to 56.

Problems with driver card capacity

With the commonly used G1 and G2V1 driver cards, memory capacity problems may occur, especially in terms of start and end country records. The cards were designed to hold 28 days of data, without regard to the current requirement for border crossing recording. Following the extension of the period, older start and end country entries may be overwritten. TachoScan Control software will automatically verify the card’s capacity and will not report violations for missing country entries if this is due to insufficient memory capacity. Older entries can be completed on the basis of data from the tachograph (marked in green) or on the basis of a previous card reading sent by the company.

Tachograph printouts and bus transport

It is important for drivers to remember that tachograph printouts for the previous 56 days must be kept in the vehicle and produced for inspection. The extended inspection period also covers bus carriages on regular routes up to 50 kilometers, which do not require tachographs. In such cases, drivers should carry a work plan covering a period of 56 days back.
